How to Use Ethos. The basic approach behind using ethos as a mode of persuasion is that it is an appeal that focuses on the character of the writer or speaker. In other words, the very character of the writer or speaker is the basis for agreeing or disagreeing with what he is arguing. With that in mind, the writer should be able to show that he is a credible person whom his readers can believe and leave doubts behind.
When students write essays, they mostly focus on such aspects as logical structure, compliance with length requirements, topic relevance and a sufficient number of materials to base their argument on. They also pay a lot of attention to checking their paper for mistakes, thus ending up concentrating lesson the content. The least of their concerns at this point is the presence of ethos, pathos, logos in an essay. It is, therefore, quite likely that many of you will become familiar with these concepts only after reading this article.
Wherever there is meaning there is persuasion. Scientific research is, for many, the epitome of objectivity and rationality. But, as Burke reminds us, conveying the meaning of our research to others involves persuasion. When these questions are answered, the solutions we propose are just that—propositions. In other words, everything we know is accepted for now but not forever.

The speaker may appear as a credible person by displaying a practical intelligence, b a virtuous character, and c good will, then his suggestions could not be rationally doubted.
