My favorite of her novels, Memento Mori , is always on my nightstand for easy access. Spark approaches her childhood gently, viewing it through a veil of mist and time. The incidents and vignettes of her family life are told with a mellow and distant affection. She draws the backdrop of her childhood, s Edinburgh, deftly and with great nostalgia. Descriptions of the soprano who lived above them, singing nightly; the Buttercup Dairy Company, where the girl on duty would cut, pat and stamp the butter into pretty portions; and the visitors to their home and their town, including a royal couple, are compelling.
She was educated at James Gillespie's School for Girls —35 , where she received some education in the Presbyterian faith. She taught English for a brief time, and then worked as a secretary in a department store. In she became engaged to Sidney Oswald Spark, thirteen years her senior, whom she had met in Edinburgh. In August of that year, she followed him out to Southern Rhodesia now Zimbabwe , and they were married on 3rd September in Salisbury.
Publisher's Weekly Spark's enchanting memoir flickers with the tart judgments, gimlet wit, bizarre episodes and odd twists of fate that distinguish her fiction. Born in to a Scottish Jewish engineer father and an English Presbyterian mother full of superstitions and presentiments, she ended her fairly idyllic Edinburgh girlhood by marrying, at age 19, a teacher 13 years her senior. She followed him to Rhodesia now Zimbabwe , but he turned out to be unstable, given to violent fits and fond of shooting the revolver he always carried. Divorcing him, she returned to England with her son and took a job working with German POWs to wage psychological warfare against the Nazis by releasing false news stories about German opposition to Hitler.
